Spring has almost sprung. We’re still lingering on to winter. So, we leaned into it by flying to somewhere even colder. In the last few months, we’ve found TV comedy gold in a sports drama, obsessed with even more coffee and sourced the best running shorts.
We're late to the game. But we're hooked. How about some comfort watching? With kindness as his tactic, American football coach, Ted Lasso, dives into the world of English football, when recruited to manage fictional team, AFC Richmond. One problem, he has absolutely no clue what is going on. You don’t have to be interested in football to like this one. Born out of an NBC commercial promoting the Premier League, Ted Lasso was developed by Jason Sudeikis and co, bringing the feel-good to Apple TV. We love the locations (actually filmed in London’s Richmond), the stellar cast and of course, Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent. It can make you laugh and cry, all in one scene and the three-season arch explores themes of community, redemption and the power of belief.
As we were fawning over The Glass House one Sunday (located in New Canaan, Connecticut and designed by architect Philip Johnson), we stumbled across Open Space which featured the modernist masterpiece as a part of their video series. We since, have fallen in love with the project. Co-founded in 2019 by architecture aficionados, Elias Tabache and Mike Aure, the duo with expertise in real estate and documentary filmmaking, combined forces to tour some of the most prolific homes. Be careful. It’s quite easy to snap out of your trance, 2 hours later, binge-watching the entire series so far on YouTube.
Our new go-to snack. The Teff Creations Company have developed a product, we didn’t know was possible. A delicious cookie with a wealth of health benefits. Derived from the founder, Jess’ trip to Ethiopia where she discovered the grain, teff, upon returning to the UK, she used it when baking at home and the rest is history. It’s great for on-the-go and whilst everyone else is on the half-time pints and pies at the football, you'll find us alternating between TTCC's three flavour combos. Fancy a taste? Our good friends at TTCC have given us a discount code. Use NEWJOURNO20 for 20% off online at teff.me. Limited time discount.
A year ago, we tried the first blend by Resinn, PIN. We were hooked and have since accumulated all in their collection incl. one of the latest coffee releases: Bette Buna. Resinn started as a home renovation by Kate & Erik in their glorious northern townhouse, blossoming into a pop-up coffee shop, roastery, homewares and supper club/coffee tasting events, all based in Sunderland. The new additions bring out floral flavours complemented by red currant, pear, pistachio and more. We love trying new combinations and we’re obsessed with their product photography. You must visit if up north!
Recently, a getaway to Switzerland beckoned and we took the opportunity to meander through the Swiss mountains to visit 7132 Hotel’s Thermal Baths in Vals. Designed by the prolific architect, Peter Zumthor, no phones were allowed and it was, quite possibly, one of the most tranquil experiences. His design melds nature, architecture and shortly after completion was granted heritage status for preservation of the 60,000 slabs of quartzite that make up the minimalist building. Here, you can bathe in mineral spring water, dip into petals or throw yourself into cold water therapy.
Just one of the many cafés by B Corp Certified, Atkinson’s Coffee Roasters, The Hall is located in Lancaster, where they were born and bred in 1837. We love The Hall, especially when it turns into a live music venue in the evening for city-wide events like Lancaster Jazz Festival but you can also try The Music Room and The Castle, both just a few streets across in different directions. Tea brewing and coffee roasting are their specialities and next door to the former Priory Hall, you’ll find their shop where you can find gadgets, books and blends.
Visionary director, Luca Guadagnino’s recent strike of cinematic genius comes out in Challengers led by Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist, following a trio of tennis players through the turbulence of romantic love triangles, sporting injuries and the rise and fall in stardom. Costume design was exquisitely curated by LOEWE’s Irish Creative Director, Jonathan Anderson, for his debut film. W Mag interviewed Luca & Jonathan, giving insight into crafting everyday wear, contrasted with the notion of becoming ‘successful through branding,’ in more detail. It was a (game, set) match made in heaven, drawing on 80/90s effortlessness to create a preppy style that paired perfectly with the classicly, clean tennis aesthetic.
