New In - Nov_Dec 23
One final round-up to conclude last year. We give you a little bit of everything; products from independents, emotional cinema to watch, a countryside retreat and delicious food. Now onto 2024!
Last chance. Rush to the White Cube, Bermondsey to catch Gormley’s latest exhibition; Body Politic. It’s classic Gormley materially; concrete. And it’s the perfect setting. The ‘body’ of work explores the human form and our relationship with space, balance, posture. An exhibition catalogue is due to be published this Jan, which we’ll be adding to our wishlist. On show until 28 Jan.
A love story that spans Seoul, Toronto, New York and a decade of two childhood sweethearts living separate lives. The two reconnect (characters played by Greta Lee and Teo Yoo) as adults and a long-distance friendship evolves which leads to a reunion. The film explores language, identity, culture and closure with a screenplay by Celine Song and her directorial debut. A24 has an official featurette that deep dives into the work better than we ever could, so if we haven’t sold you yet, watch here.
You know we love Soder Studio, so we’re eyeing up their newest product; the rope bag. Currently sold out from Collection 01 offcuts but we have our fingers crossed for a restock or potentially, we hope, nice things using waste from Collection 02. You can learn more about the founder, Addison and the brand from our interview in the New Angles series, last year.
We’ve been re-reading a lot of cookbooks recently, sourcing new inspiration. That, alongside signing up to The New York Times: Cooking newsletters, we’ve been inundated with new recipes. ‘Raw’ by Icelandic cook, Solla Eiríksdóttir is a go-to of ours for a ‘modern take’ on vegetarian feasting, from light lunches to sweet treats. Any new takes on a brownie, we’re keen to try; black beans as a base surprisingly work!
Alternative lifestyle brand Mahala, run by Emily & Redwan is closing the doors on their Suffolk guesthouse in April so we encourage you to book while you can. We’ve known the team for years and our friendliest encounter (if not, all our encounters) was when they allowed us to take a jumpsuit home, try it on, ‘see if you like it’ and then pay later. The same level of care and human-centred customer experience translates into their Tudor home, kitted out in beautiful interiors, soaps and scents from their product range and incredible food inspired by the families’ heritage. It’s a great London escape with chickens and rabbits roaming. Last bookings are until 10 Mar but you can still catch them at their Crouch End store.
A heartwarming film, set in many locations close to home, for us. Directed by Ken Loach, The Old Oak is a pub set in a fictional colliery village, once a thriving mining community. When Syrian refugees arrive, feuds and friendships form but unlikely bonds are forged through the sharing of food and photography which shows common threads between the two cultures. ‘When you eat together, you stick together.’
Handmade glassware made from recycled materials is The Atlas Works’ speciality. A collaboration between designers in London and a factory in the Moroccan mountains, the glassware range covers jugs, dishes, vases, the list goes on. It’s a modern, utilitarian brand that uses artisanal, traditional techniques to produce. We use our tumblers for home coffee brewing. Check out Obadiah or Resinn, our previous ‘New In’ featured brands for the ultimate pairing.
Of course, we joined the ranks and tackled Barbenheimer last year. So, naturally when Variety announced the latest combination of interviewees and interviewers, we clicked on Cillian Murphy and Margot Robbie’s ‘Actors on Actors’ instantly. We also loved the interview with Greta Lee and Andrew Scott exploring the synergies between Past Lives and All of Us Strangers (another film, we will be watching upon release, no doubt) but there’s a huge backlog of past interviews to choose from.
We have been taking full advantage of Dishroom’s at home delivery service. Granted, we order the same thing every time; Chole Bhature. Occasionally, a tad more adventurous in-restaurant, but only just. It is our go-to when in London and we’re thrilled to see the Indian cuisine-inspired eatery taking over northern territory in Manchester and Edinburgh.
North-easterners in need of a proper haircut, we don’t go anywhere else. Set in our ways, you could say. Cliodhna is a hair stylist with a studio based in Newcastle and she is a master of her craft. If you’re too far away, we recommend giving her Instagram a follow for major hair inspiration on your next trim or drop her a direct message to book in.
