The Art of Giving [29 Nov - 1 Dec_24]

A Modular Festive Market

SERCHIA Gallery and New Journo are delighted to present The Art of Giving, a new approach to seasonal shopping in the form of a Modular Festive Market. Join founders Christine Serchia and Emily Birkett, respectively, to celebrate the season, championing artists, women-led British brands and timelessly designed products in a low-key setting. Located in Bristol, the gallery will act as a shop floor showcasing a carefully curated selection of twelve highly coveted female-founded brands, a nod to the Twelve Days of Christmas, personally chosen by the curatorial duo. This will be interspersed with ‘Marked by Light,’ SERCHIA’s latest exhibit in collaboration with the Bristol Photography Festival, highlighting four talented women photographers in keeping with the weekend’s ethos.

After working in London, the two curators now reside in Bristol and County Durham, polar opposites of the United Kingdom. The curation of goods on sale will reflect the locality by also including rural small business owners outside of capital cities, and supporting makers from all corners of the UK.

The informal event puts the ease back into Christmas shopping. Twelve items in SERCHIA and New Journo’s modular wishlist will be displayed in the white-walled gallery space as works of art at a higher price point. Adjacent is a cosy room, labelled the ‘pink room,’ filled with smaller stocking fillers. This pre-curated edit allows you to mix and match your own hamper, knowing all are complimentary.

Happening on the traditional Black Friday weekend, the pop-up event challenges the perception of consumerism, offering a more tailored, considered outlook on gifting. It’s about the ceremony and rituals you share with others rather than the product itself: interactions, utilitarianism, and sentimentality, with quality and beauty taking front and centre. A small gathering will be held on Fri 29 Nov, in addition to the regular weekend opening hours, as a chance to meander the gallery and chat with the organisers, surrounded by ambient music, mulled wine, baked goods and festive scents. It is free-entry with community at its core.

“Art is a holistic practice. As is kindness. The Art of Giving offers a creative ceremony to celebrate our gratitude for those we love by sharing the gift of time. The modular curation of these unique and beautiful designs simplify the process of giving, while enriching the thought behind each object to encourage time-based exchanges where the ceremony itself offers the recipient a gift of time, of memory, of sensorial experience, over and over. Infinitely. A way to spend time together even while apart.”

“Working with Christine and SERCHIA Gallery is a dream collaboration for New Journo and me. We have a similar curatorial eye, and this, combined with our skillsets in art direction, market curation, and brand consultancy, means the concept development has been seamlessly aligned. As female founders, we are excited to champion other women-led small business owners and present them with consideration, creating an inviting shopping experience which is complimentary to the gallery.”
