New In - Mar 23
As Spring approaches, we’re sharing the list of things we’re loving for this March. One of the best markets for second-hand furniture shopping, an online archive for some of the most prolific cultural institutions, a handy utensil and our latest coffee obsession.
This is our go-to-market for interiors shopping and it returns this weekend (11, 12 March) at MKII, East London. A more circular way to shop, each dealer has a carefully curated collection of one-off items and houses sellers who source furniture from different decades which means, regardless of your style, you’ll be sure to find something that fits your aesthetic.
Niwaki Toribe Kitchen Scissors
They’ve been in the extensive Niwaki roster of products for years but having been sold out, on and off, for months, we recommend to snap them up whenever you can. They are estimated to be back in stock on 31 March. We rave about them because they’re not just pretty utensils. They’re dishwasher-friendly (great) but also can be deconstructed to make it easier to clean in between the blades.
The sleekest notebook you’ll ever come across. There are 368 plain white pages to choose from and if you’re messy, MD also sell a clear protective slip which slides over the cover to help avoid any marks. Not only does the exposed spine look visually pleasing but it’s more technical than that. The flexibility allows for both sides to be fully flat which makes for a much easier writing experience.
Led by Cate Blanchett and produced, written and directed by filmmaker Todd Field, TÁR is the newest psychological drama that has taken over the nominations during this award season. The film follows the decline of fictional chief conductor Lydia Tár, the first female in the role at Berlin Philharmonic; the achievement is overshadowed by her manipulative behaviour and abusing her privilege of power. On a lighter note, the film is a feast for the eyes with slick, tailored wardrobes, architecture and interiors that capture minimalism and brutalism across Germany and New York and a stunning score compiled by Icelandic musician Hildur Guðnadóttir, who is known for her enchanting, dark compositions.
If you’re at Yorkshire Sculpture Park between now and the 25 June, you have to drop into the YSP Centre - don’t just stick to the outside installations. Stitched Stories is a textile work by non-binary artist Andi Walker, following on from their previous exhibition On Queer Ground at the Bothy Gallery last year. Weekly sessions were held to capture memories acknowledging everyone’s path is unique. Meanwhile, the participants made marks on the paper beneath the desk which followed the rhythms of their story. Andi translated this into a quilt through the dashes and dots, on display alongside many original documentations on paper.
The next TV series we’re streaming is the latest travel documentary. This time on Apple TV+, The Reluctant Traveler follows Canadian actor, Eugene Levy touring the world’s most stunning destinations spanning Costa Rica, Finland, Italy, Japan, Maldives, Portugal, South Africa and the USA. This is escapism at its finest, wandering through incredible places, and hotels, immersing himself in local culture. Reluctant, because he hates to travel, which makes for quite an interesting watch, especially when he gets exposed to 21st-century quirks like ice plunges and cold water swimming.
The Internet Archive is a non-profit, free digital library of cultural artefacts. We’ve jumped straight into their Guggenheim archive which houses books that date back many eras; artist retrospectives from the likes of Josef Albers, Mark Rothko and Lucio Fontana, amongst exhibition catalogues and more published works.
Resinn is a soon-to-launch coffee roastery/concept store coming to The Sheepfolds in Sunderland later this year. Headed up by Kate & Erik, they have just launched their first coffee release, PIN which gives us fig, blood orange and milk chocolate vibes. If you want a taster of what the physical store will look like then their home renovation provides the perfect teaser. Orders via. DM for now!
It’s a Bao speciality restaurant but with a twist. Take yourself off to enjoy a sing-song in one of their Karaoke rooms at their Noodle Shop or Borough locations. Just ensure the door is firmly shut. But if you really do just want to dine, that’s perfectly fine too. The DIY ordering style consists of marking your own requests on a small menu which is swiftly taken to the kitchen and it’s some of the best bao buns you’ll ever taste.
