New In - Nov_Dec 24

As we close out the year, we’ve been reflecting on some of our latest finds and revisits that have brought us joy – the newest arts and culture podcast, an American remake of a Swedish classic, and a limited-edition collection celebrating scent.

Glas Folk: Provisions

Glas Folk, a pop-up store concept by Provisions and Francli, surfaces this November in London as a quiet celebration of handwork and tactility. Expect a curated showcase of makers, their crafts splayed like pages in a still life – where the ordinary becomes ritual, and material is the primary focus. Derived from the Cornish word Glas, rural makers will be taking prime spot in the big smoke, across furniture, art, homeware and clothing. Selected Exhibitors: Amy Brock Morgan, Carnwear, EOT Ceramics, Ellie Birkhead, Francli Craftwear, Nogi Works, Sarah Johnson, Studio Haran and Weaver Rae. Drop by Provisions from 21.11.24 – 24.11.24 to shop.

CHANEL Connects

We discovered CHANEL Connects through The Gentlewoman editor, Penny Martin’s involvement as a co-host for Season 4, recorded at the Venice Biennale. Penny joined Yana Peel, President of Arts, Culture & Heritage at the prolific label, for the podcast, chatting with leading game changers and pioneering innovators in the creative space. From actors to editors, curators, and architects, the intimate conversations have welcomed thoughts from the likes of Frida Escobedo, William Kentridge, Sheila Heti, and Anicka Yi. Available all over, but we listen on Apple

Perfumer H x Nigel Slater

‘A Feast’ is a limited-edition collection by Perfumer H and food writer Nigel Slater that celebrates the union of food and fragrance. Is this not the most beautiful combination? It drops at the ideal time – the A/W season – and combines neroli, clove, sandalwood, and birch tar, evoking festive warmth and spice. Choose from a selection of perfumes, soaps, candles, teas, and incense, all featuring divine packaging designed by Studio Frith. It’s being snapped up, so rapid action is required.

HOME

Apple TV may be the best platform for docuseries. There, we said it. HOME is another stunning documentary, this time exploring the world’s most extraordinary homes. It delves into the visionary minds behind architectural masterpieces, revealing innovative designs, cultural influences, and progressive practices. An array of buildings that challenge the status quo, from artist Theaster Gates developing new social hubs to create safe, third spaces for overlooked communities, to breathtaking structures that redefine the meaning of home.

Mies

A poised tribute to one of the most influential architects, Mies, published by Phaidon, maps the architectural minimalism of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe through over 700 images, drawings and plans. Written by architectural theorist Detlef Mertins, this work interprets his spatial philosophy with precision and clarity, revealing the quiet power of simplicity in modern form through a combination of text and imagery. It sits proudly on our coffee table.

The Bridge Hotel Vaults

In November, we were privileged to attend the soft launch of the latest addition to Sunderland’s redevelopment, The Bridge Hotel Vaults – a historic pub dating back to the 1700s. Previously occupied by the Lambton family and subsequently named Lambton House, it has undergone varying phases, becoming a pub in 1820 before officially closing in the 1990s. At one point, Charles Dickens was a resident. Carrying on the legacy, after a renovation by Vaux Brewery and Pop Recs, the Grade II-listed building is now our new go-to for pre-match pints. Currently offering a range of craft beers produced by the brewery itself, with plans to expand its food offering at Midnight Pizza Cru in 2025.

Criterion Closet Picks

Criterion Collection has developed a cult following in its own right. Still, it is undoubtedly enhanced by its Closet Picks series, which sees actors, directors, and screenwriters scour the Criterion library archives. Guests handpick their most loved films, ones with personal influence, sharing candid anecdotes and others that have impacted their careers. These charming interviews celebrate the transformative power of cinema, revealing how timeless films inspire generations. We’ve watched Winona Ryder, Zoë Kravitz and Channing Tatum, Wim Wenders, Renate Reinsve and Charlotte Gainsbourg’s selections countless times.

Steve Jobs Archive

The Steve Jobs Archive is a curated, primarily digital platform that launched in the latter half of 2022. It stands as both a repository and a living reflection of one of the most influential creative minds of the modern era. While it draws on Job’s private, physical collection, the core of the archive is online, with the site hosting exhibits, such as Objects of Our Life, which present footage, emails, sleek prototypes, and essays. We’ve also been diving into Make Something Wonderful, a collection of Jobs’ speeches, interviews, and handwritten notes. All the accessible material is guided by his belief that design is not just aesthetic but deeply human.

Scenes from a Marriage

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, in Scenes from a Marriage, dismantle the glossy myth of domestic bliss. Adapted from Ingmar Bergman’s 1973 classic, the HBO series relocates from Sweden to America, dissecting love and ego, Isaac and Chastain – real-life friends turned sparring partners – navigate modern marriage. It’s a beautifully elegant portrayal that spans ten years, and earned the duo Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations in 2022. We’ve been watching on Apple TV.

In Conversation with SERCHIA Gallery

Last year, we interviewed Addison from Soder Studio for our New Angles series. This year, Addison interviewed Christine from SERCHIA Gallery for her In Conversation series. Then, we were thrilled to have Soder Studio stocked at The Art of Giving [29 Nov – 1 Dec], curated by SERCHIA and ourselves — a lovely link-up among the three. For In Conversation, the incredibly talented James Retief took gallery shots of Christine and her most prized wardrobe items.

Stocked:

Minimal Work Jacket [£340]

“The Minimal Workjacket pays homage to the traditional worker's jacket. The jacket has two outer chest pockets and subtle folded cuff detail. It’s a unisex style and available in Natural White, Charcoal Black and Red Brick.”

The Rope Pouch Bag [£55]

“The Rope Pouch Bag is a soft cross-body bag that is made using Collection 01 offcuts and the addition of a rope strap, ensuring all materials are 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton. These pouch bags use up scrap fabric that would traditionally go to waste. Helping us become closer to zero waste.”
